Vega’s Clutch Bat Ignites Season-Opening Statement as Viera Tops Merritt Island 11–8
The 2026 season opener between Viera High School and Merritt Island High School (Game 2 of the season) delivered everything you could want in a rivalry showdown — momentum swings, clutch hitting, dominant pitching stretches, and an explosive sixth inning that flipped the game on its head.
When the dust settled on February 18, it was Vega who stood at the center of it all.
Vega Delivers in the Biggest Moments
Freshman Arianna Vega (Tampa Mustangs) drove in four runs on two hits, providing the offensive spark that powered the Viera Varsity Hawks to an 11–8 victory over Merritt Island.
In the fifth inning, with tension rising and the Mustangs threatening to pull away, Vega delivered a clutch single that plated two runs and kept Viera within striking distance. Then came the defining moment.
"To be able to trail like we did and come back says a lot about who Viera is today. In the past we struggled when trailing so taking a group of very young athletes playing with a lead then losing it to come back like they did is massive for the direction the program is going. Trailing heading into the sixth, Viera erupted for eight runs on seven hits in a game-changing inning that stunned the home crowd. The biggest swing? A laser double off the bat of Vega that drove in two more and gave the Hawks control for good.
That’s what leaders do on Opening Night.
A Game of Momentum Swings
Viera opened scoring early after an error brought home the first run of the game. But Merritt Island answered in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on an error of their own before Elliott ripped a three-run single to swing momentum and build a 4–1 advantage.
For a moment, it felt like the Mustangs had seized control.
But championship-caliber teams respond — and Viera did just that.
Young Goes the Distance
Freshman Shea Young earned the win with a gritty complete-game performance. Over seven innings, she allowed eight hits and eight runs (just three earned), striking out nine and walking only one. Despite defensive miscues behind her, she stayed composed and attacked the zone. The Freshman picked up her first career High School win on the evening.
Balanced Attack Fuels the Hawks
Viera tallied 11 hits in the win, with Vega, Jordan, Reilly, and Worden each collecting two. The Hawks also created pressure on the base paths — Jordan and Wofford each swiped multiple bags as Viera racked up four stolen bases on the night.
That aggressiveness forced mistakes and kept Merritt Island on its heels.
For the Mustangs, Hedleston drove in two runs with Home Run to deep left center field, while Elliott and Amos each recorded multi-hit performances in a competitive showing that proves Merritt Island will be a factor this season.
Statement Made
Opening Night often reveals a team’s character. Viera showed resilience. They showed explosiveness. And most importantly, they showed they can deliver in high-pressure moments.
With the 11–8 victory, the Hawks set the tone for 2026 and now turn their focus to Spruce Creek on Wednesday.
