Trine Softball: Building on a Championship Foundation

The Trine University softball program is riding high after a dominant 2025 NCAA Division III National Championship season, marking the second national title in three years for the Thunder. Their blend of elite talent, veteran leadership, and sustained excellence under Head Coach Donnie Danklefsen has solidified Trine as a perennial powerhouse in Division III softball.

A Season for the History Books

Trine finished the season with an impressive 46–5 overall record, tying the program record for wins in a season while doing it with fewer losses than their 2023 national championship team

In the championship finals at Inspiration Field in Bloomington, Illinois, the Thunder swept the title series against Virginia Wesleyan University, claiming victories of 8–1 and 3–1 to secure the national crown.

The championship run capped off a season that saw Trine go 10–0 in the NCAA bracket and finish undefeated against championship site competition.

"Division III sports deserve far more coverage than they get. The level of competition, the passion, and the commitment from these athletes is incredible, and too many people never see it. These players are doing something special, and it’s time we shine a bigger light on D3 sports and give them the exposure they’ve earned."

Clutch Performances on the Big Stage

Trine’s success was fueled by standout performances up and down the roster:

  • Alexis Michon, the senior ace, was named Most Outstanding Player of the championship series after her dominant pitching, finishing with a 26–1 record and delivering strong outings when it mattered most.

  • Emma Lee delivered the game-winning blast in the championship-clinching game with a three-run home run, a swing that became a defining moment of the title run.

  • Debbie Hill and Macy Rocha earned All-Tournament recognition for their contributions in both offensive production and defensive play throughout the postseason.

These performances reflect a deep and balanced roster capable of rising to any occasion.

Dominant in Conference and Beyond

The Thunder were equally impressive in conference play, going 16–0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competition and capturing yet another league championship. This undefeated conference run showcased the team’s consistency and resilience throughout the season.

Coach Donnie Danklefsen, now in his 21st season, received widespread recognition for his leadership, including MIAA Coach of the Year honors and national accolades alongside his coaching staff as the NFCA Division III Coaching Staff of the Year

What This Championship Means

This national title marks Trine’s second NCAA Division III softball championship in three years, further establishing the program’s elite status and sustained excellence at the highest level of Division III competition.

With a historic record, multiple postseason honors, and a championship pedigree, the Thunder have set a standard that future squads will strive to meet. The culture of winning and development under Coach Danklefsen’s leadership continues to attract top talent and build a program that thrives under pressure.

Looking Ahead

For Trine Softball, the 2025 season was not just a celebration of achievement but a launching pad for future success. Returning leaders alongside new contributors ensure that the Thunder will enter the next season with both confidence and ambition.

With national championships now part of the program’s identity, Trine isn’t just winning games — they’re defining what excellence looks like in Division III softball.
