The Miracle of Samuel: What Every Christian Athlete Can Learn from 1 Samuel
By Ricky Bumgardner Jr
Before Samuel Was a Leader, He Was a Miracle
When most people think of Samuel, they think about the prophet who anointed kings, heard God’s voice, and led Israel. But before Samuel became a great leader, he was a miracle.
His story begins in 1 Samuel 1 with a woman named Hannah. Hannah desperately wanted a child, but she was unable to have one. Year after year she prayed, cried, and trusted God while enduring disappointment and criticism from others.
One day, Hannah went before the Lord and poured out her heart in prayer. She made a promise that if God blessed her with a son, she would dedicate him completely to God’s service.
God answered her prayer.
Samuel’s birth was nothing short of a miracle. His name literally means “heard by God” because God heard Hannah’s cry and responded.
What seemed impossible became possible through God’s power.

Every Athlete Has a Hannah Moment
Athletes understand waiting.
You wait for your opportunity.
You wait for playing time.
You wait for a starting position.
You wait for recruiters to notice you.
You wait for your breakthrough.
Like Hannah, there are moments when you feel like your prayers are unanswered. You work hard, stay committed, and wonder when your opportunity will come.
The story of Samuel reminds us that God’s timing is always perfect.
Sometimes God is preparing something greater than what we can see.
What looked like a delay in Hannah’s life was actually preparation for a miracle.
As Christian athletes, we must remember that our identity is not found in immediate results but in God’s purpose for our lives.
Key Verse:
“For the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.” (1 Samuel 2:3)
God sees every workout, every practice, every sacrifice, and every prayer—even when nobody else does.
Samuel Learned to Listen
One of the most famous moments in Samuel’s life occurs in 1 Samuel 3.
As a young boy, Samuel heard his name being called during the night. Thinking it was Eli the priest, he ran to him multiple times.
Finally, Eli realized it was God calling Samuel and instructed him to respond:
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10)

Samuel became great because he learned something many people never learn:
He listened to God.
Athletes Today Hear Many Voices
Athletes hear coaches.
Athletes hear teammates.
Athletes hear parents.
Athletes hear social media.
Athletes hear critics.
Athletes hear the pressure to perform.
But the most important voice a Christian athlete can hear is God’s voice.
When God becomes louder than the crowd, confidence grows.
When God becomes louder than social media, identity becomes secure.
When God becomes louder than fear, purpose becomes clear.
Samuel Chose Character Over Popularity
As Samuel grew, he became known as a man of integrity.
The people trusted him because he consistently followed God.
In sports, talent may get attention, but character earns respect.
Many athletes spend years developing their skills but very little time developing their character.
Samuel reminds us that leadership starts with who you are, not what you can do.
At Four One Sports, we believe God cares about your batting average, shooting percentage, or stats far less than He cares about your heart.
Your faith should influence:
- How you treat teammates
- How you respond to adversity
- How you handle success
- How you respect coaches and officials
- How you represent Christ on and off the field
Samuel Was Called for a Bigger Purpose
Samuel could have focused on himself.
Instead, he focused on serving God’s purpose.
He became one of the most influential leaders in Israel’s history because he understood that life was bigger than personal achievement.
The same is true for athletes.
Sports are temporary.
Trophies fade.
Records get broken.
Championship banners eventually come down.
But the impact you make for Christ can last forever.
God may have given you athletic ability not just to win games but to influence teammates, encourage others, and point people toward Him.
Your platform is your mission field.
Three Lessons Every Christian Athlete Can Learn from Samuel
1. Trust God’s Timing
Just because something hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean God isn’t working.
Stay faithful in the waiting.
2. Listen for God’s Voice
Spend time in prayer and Scripture daily.
The louder God’s voice becomes, the clearer your purpose becomes.
3. Use Your Platform for God’s Glory
Your sport is a gift from God.
Compete with excellence, but use your influence to honor Christ.
Final Thoughts
Samuel’s story begins with a miracle, but it doesn’t end there.
The miracle wasn’t simply that he was born.
The miracle was that he remained faithful to God throughout his life.
That’s the challenge for every Christian athlete.
It’s not enough to simply believe in God.
We are called to follow Him, listen to Him, and represent Him in everything we do.
Like Samuel, may we be athletes who respond every day:
“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
When we do that, God can use our talents, our teams, and our testimonies to make an impact far greater than any scoreboard could ever measure.
