Tournament Bible Study: Lessons From 1 Samuel
By Ricky Bumgardner Jr. | Four One Sports Christian Athlete Brand
Introduction
Tournament weekends bring pressure, emotion, excitement, failure, and opportunity all at once. In moments like these, athletes don’t just reveal skill—they reveal character. The book of 1 Samuel shows us how God develops leaders, teams, and individuals through preparation, adversity, and heart checks.
This study is about learning to compete with faith, humility, and purpose—no matter the scoreboard.

1. God Looks at the Heart (1 Samuel 16:7)
When Samuel was choosing Israel’s next king, God reminded him that outward appearance is not what matters most—heart posture is.
Softball Lesson:
Stats, playing time, and attention do not define you. Your attitude, effort, and response to coaching matter more than talent alone.
Ask Yourself:
- Am I playing for attention or for purpose?
- Does my attitude reflect Christ when things go wrong?
2. Preparation in Private Builds Confidence in Public (David)
David wasn’t suddenly ready for Goliath—he had been faithful in the field long before the spotlight.
Sports Lesson:
What you do at practice, in conditioning, and when no one is watching prepares you for game-changing moments.
- Extra reps matter
- Hustle matters
- Consistency matters
Reminder: Pressure reveals preparation.
3. Pride and Jealousy Can Destroy Teams (Saul)
Saul started strong but slowly lost focus because of pride, insecurity, and comparison.
Sports Lesson:
Teams fall apart when players compete with each other instead of for each other.
Watch out for:
- Complaining about roles or playing time
- Comparing yourself to teammates
- Blaming others after mistakes
- Refusing correction
Strong teams stay unified even in adversity.
4. Leadership and Character Matter (Samuel)
Samuel led with truth, consistency, and obedience to God. He didn’t lead for attention—he led for purpose.
Sports Lesson:
Leadership isn’t just coaches—it’s players too.
Great teammates:
- Encourage others
- Stay coachable
- Bring energy in every situation
- Put the team first
Tournament Challenge
As you compete this weekend, remember:
- Play with effort even when tired
- Encourage teammates after mistakes
- Respond with humility in success
- Stay composed in failure
- Represent your team and faith well
Team Prayer (Before or After Games)
Lord,
Thank You for the opportunity to compete today. Help us learn from the life lessons in 1 Samuel.
Give us the heart of David—faithful and prepared.
Give us the humility of Samuel—wise and obedient.
Protect us from the pride and jealousy of Saul.
Help us play with unity, encouragement, and courage in every moment. Win or lose, let our character honor You.
We give this game and this team to You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
